Observer Notes:A group of 6 snowboarders built a prepared jump with a landing on a steep bank above a creek. The first person to launch of off the jump triggered a 3 to 4 feet deep, persistent slab avalanche when he landed in the undisturbed snow on the 42 degree bank. He was deeply buried (9 feet) at the base of the bank in a terrain trap. The rest of the group observed the slide and immediately went into rescue mode. The buried snowboarder was wearing a transceiver. Transceiver readings and initial probing efforts indicated it was a deep burial. The group began to dig. Once the excavation got deep enough, a probe made contact with the buried rider. They continued digging, excavated the man and began CPR. He did not survive. Members of this group had been in the area the day before and had built and used a jump at a nearby location along the same bank. Our sincere condolences and our are extended to his family, friends and all involved.
